The Twilight Wife is a complex novel about secrets, married life and obsession. The narrative develops an initially simplistic tale of a woman who survived a diving accident and suffers from amnesia, but the tale quickly begins to unfold deep complexities that alter Kyra's understanding of who she is, what her life was like and slowly the edges of her idyllic relationship with her husband unravels. A wonderful tale of the complexities of married life and what makes us individuals; The Twilight Wife is an intense, haunting and enthralling read. In addition to ... Continue Reading...
Review: Every Hidden Thing
Every Hidden Thing is another book with a summary that doesn’t really do the story justice. I was expecting a novel that was very different from the one I got. I really can’t complain that this novel’s summary led me astray because the actual book was so much better than expected! The novel opens with an intense fight between the fathers of main characters over the correct placement of a set of vertebra (or is it actually tail bones?) on a plesiosaurs. Thus begins the very public and disruptive competition between two very different men that spills over into their ... Continue Reading...
Review: Dan vs. Nature
Dan vs Nature is a hilarious novel with plenty of raunchy humour that kept me laughing out loud. It's rare to find a novel that actually catches me off guard and makes me laugh in delight, but Dan vs Nature, as the cover promises, is an "outrageously funny and wickedly raunchy romp in the woods". In terms of novels, Dan vs Nature is probably one of the more "out there" Novels that deviates from my traditional female lead characters, romance and intrigue - but it deviates in a good way. What starts out as a story about a boy trying to thwart his mother's suitor with a ... Continue Reading...
Review: Stranger King
The Stranger King was a short novel that has some really interesting ideas for a post-apocalyptic Canada. Canada is struggling against our American neighbours and war has altered the atmosphere causing harmful UV radiation to be at critical levels during the day. Lena decides that instead of fighting against the American troops as her father did before she was born, she will join an elite group mercenaries called “Daywalkers” who brave the danger of the sun to complete random tasks during the daylight hours. The war between Canada and US implodes once more, but is cut ... Continue Reading...
Review: With Malice
With Malice was one of those books that catches your interest from the first page and takes you for a ride through a story about coming of age, self-identity and the tricky nature of memory. The narrative is written in the voice of Jill, a girl who cannot remember anything from the six weeks before her car accident that killed her best friend. We follow Jill as she remembers bits and pieces of that fateful summer abroad and follows a bread trail of legal evidence that paints Jill as her best friend’s killer. Did Jill kill Simone, or did her best friend try to kill ... Continue Reading...
