Ivy Gamble is the type of private investigator involved in tracking people who are up to all manner of unpleasant things in order to keep the lights (barely) on. Review: Ninth House
Ninth House is Leigh Bardugo's first attempt at an adult series after writing a number of wildly popular young adult novels. Our heroine is Galaxy (Alex) Stern: a badass, street smart twenty-something who can see ghosts. And not the casper kind. The gritty, very dead kind. After her boyfriend is murdered and she almost dies in the same attack, she is given full ride to Yale and, while things are finally looking up for Alex, her new role as Dante in a secret society that is tasked with policing students using magic on campus may be more than she bargained for.. I ... Continue Reading...
Review: Chasing Shadows
Chasing Shadows is a decent detective novel with plenty of details to keep reader guessing. Ignoring the parts that were rather drawn out, this was an acceptable read with strong plot and character development. We enter with the mysterious circumstances surrounding the mysterious murder/suicide of a plantation owner, a slowly burn romance between our main characters Claire and Nick, and end with a shocking revelation concerning Nick's past that impacts every single character we meet in Karen Harper's first novel in the South Shores series. A slow, often plodding ... Continue Reading...
Review: The Twilight Wife
The Twilight Wife is a complex novel about secrets, married life and obsession. The narrative develops an initially simplistic tale of a woman who survived a diving accident and suffers from amnesia, but the tale quickly begins to unfold deep complexities that alter Kyra's understanding of who she is, what her life was like and slowly the edges of her idyllic relationship with her husband unravels. A wonderful tale of the complexities of married life and what makes us individuals; The Twilight Wife is an intense, haunting and enthralling read. In addition to ... Continue Reading...
Review: Every Hidden Thing
Every Hidden Thing is another book with a summary that doesn’t really do the story justice. I was expecting a novel that was very different from the one I got. I really can’t complain that this novel’s summary led me astray because the actual book was so much better than expected! The novel opens with an intense fight between the fathers of main characters over the correct placement of a set of vertebra (or is it actually tail bones?) on a plesiosaurs. Thus begins the very public and disruptive competition between two very different men that spills over into their ... Continue Reading...
