Review: Chasing Shadows

April 16, 2017 · Leave a Comment

Chasing Shadows is a decent detective novel with plenty of details to keep  reader guessing. Ignoring the parts that were rather drawn out, this was an acceptable read with strong plot and character development. We enter with the mysterious circumstances surrounding the mysterious murder/suicide of a plantation owner, a slowly burn romance between our main characters Claire and Nick, and end with a shocking revelation concerning Nick's past that impacts every single character we meet in Karen Harper's first novel in the South Shores series. A slow, often plodding ... Continue Reading...

Review: Always Happy Hour

April 16, 2017 · Leave a Comment

Always Happy Hour seemed like the type of literature that would be insightful and thought provoking. I envisioned a novel about women who's lives were a mess because of personal struggles or bad luck, perhaps even tales about these women overcoming their poor circumstances - not a set of tales about women who are generally selfish, judgemental and/or continuing to support some serious self-confidence issues. These are women who know they have serious issues and do nothing to change it. In retrospect, this may have been a novel about mental illness rather than a novel ... Continue Reading...

Review: The Drifter

April 10, 2017 · Leave a Comment

The Drifter was a dark and thought provoking novel that took me a very, very long time to get through. The unrelated details throughout this novel added realism to this novel in a way that made this book perhaps a little too real for me and resulted in many "breaks". The details evoked personal feelings that were perfectly related to the experiences of the three young friends Caroline, Betsy and Ginny who, although completely unalike, were best friends until the shining future of all three women are changed by one horrific night. I felt connected to the characters by ... Continue Reading...

Review: The Ship Beyond Time

February 27, 2017 · Leave a Comment

Well, The Ship Beyond Time was just as good, if not better than its predecessor The Girl From Everywhere. The Girl From Everywhere sometimes dragged with intense descriptions of Hawaii's cultural and historical background and many readers found this detracted from the enjoyability of The Girl From Everywhere. In The Ship Beyond Time, Heilig seems to improved her writing to make it more entertaining for the masses while continuing to educate readers on mythological locations of cultural significance. Although this shift from heavily educating narrative to a more ... Continue Reading...

Review: Long May She Reign

February 20, 2017 · Leave a Comment

Long May She Reign is about a girl with crippling social anxiety who becomes queen. In an effort to handle the social pressures and constant presence of being queen, this girl obsesses over the question why. Why is she the one in line to have survived the massacre? Why would anyone massacre the king? And why doesn't anyone want to figure out who actually poisoned everyone? Freya doubts those around her, herself and the core morality of the court over which she is now reigning monarch. She struggles to change the injustice of her world, to overcome her preconceptions ... Continue Reading...
