I’ve always found it difficult to review debut novels due to their very nature. A debut novel is the first glimpse we have of a new author in what is - usually - an unpolished work. I find it incredibly difficult to review any book because it takes skill and patience that I will never hope to achieve in my life time. Authors pour their heart and soul into each work, and while reading is an entirely subjective activity, when it comes to reviewing, the reader is judging a work of personal art. Reading The Rush's Edge, I was reminded why debuts are often regarded as ... Continue Reading...
Review: Bones Inside and Out
I'll preface this review by saying I knew absolutely nothing about bones. I could tell you that it’s the hard stuff that holds our bodies vertical, that they sometimes break but eventually heal and it’s where our red blood cells come from, but beyond that? Nothing. Bones is a book that is for the initiated and uninitiated alike, although granted the initiated will find that 90% of the content of this book is remedial. The book is divided in three sections: what are bones and what do they do, what happens when bones ‘go bad’ and what innovations have we developed to ... Continue Reading...
Review: The Doors of Eden
The Doors of Eden is a tome at over 600 pages, but is written so beautifully that is doesn’t feel like 600 pages. It was a delight to read. I had a really difficult time writing this review. I wrote and rewrote my review before taking a break and then make this final attempt. My review doesn't do this book justice and some aspects of the book I found had my opinion waffling over whether this was a Very Good Book or just A Good Book. In the end, regardless of my struggles, the crux of this review is: Its a worthy read and you wont be sorry you read it! This is my ... Continue Reading...
Review: Magic for Liars
Ivy Gamble is the type of private investigator involved in tracking people who are up to all manner of unpleasant things in order to keep the lights (barely) on. She longs for a day when a lucrative job comes her way with a real challenge, not another cheating spouse or embezzling employee. Ivy’s dreams come true when a mysterious woman appears in her office asking her to investigate a murder for a decent fee. The only catch? It’s the illustrious magic academy her sister works for and Ivy has plenty of personal baggage when it comes to magic and her sister.. Reading ... Continue Reading...
August 2020 Readathons
It's the end of summer and work is still work from home, so having some extra time to engage in hobbies means I am looking at doing some Readathons in August for fun. There are plenty of Readathons this month, but I only chose two: Tome ToppleTome Topple I chose because I received an ARC that is a whopping 600 pages and needs to be read by end of August - so why not participate in a readathon dedicated entirely to books over 500 pages? Motivation! This readathon spans August 8th until the 21st. Prompts: The Book: The tome you’ve most recently ... Continue Reading...
