In Beastly Bones we return to the city of New England in 1982 with Abigail Rook and R.F. Jackaby where we follow them on yet another adventure of the paranormal nature. When I read book one of this series I had a hunch that the first book would be the foundation of a series that only improve with each installment which, so far, seems to be a fair assumption. I definitely felt like there was plenty of character development and general story building in this installment. Unfortunately, Beastly Bones was rather slow and took awhile to read, but it is definitely worth ... Continue Reading...

Thursday Bookish Updates #13
Thursday Bookish Updates is a weekly post here at Silk&Serif devoted to anything book related. The main goal of this posting is to keep readers up to date on what's going on in the community and get a taste of future posts. I will provide information on some community events I am participating in and blurbs on newly acquired titles to be reviewed at a later date. I might even slip in a few surprises here and there. I was inspired by a post I read by Kelsye at Wise Ink Blog Ultimate Bloggers Guide to Growing Your Readership. Her list of ways to increase traffic ... Continue Reading...
Re-Review: Nirvana
This is my review of the revised and published edition of Nirvana. My review of the ARC copy of Nirvana, which I enjoyed, can be found here. I'm pretty sure Nirvana was rewritten to fit with a middle grade audience or YA focus on the second go around. I'm not a reader of middle grade fiction, so my review probably doesn't really fit with the intended audience..but Nirvana works better as an New Adult Speculative Fiction title than a Young Adult title. To be fair, in such a short amount of time the author rewrote Nirvana better than I ever could. Uhh..okay. So, ... Continue Reading...
Dave vs The Monsters: Ascendance
It took me awhile to get through book three of the Dave Hooper trilogy. I've never been much for military fiction so I think that perhaps the amount of fighting scenes in Ascendance might have slowed me down. It's not that Ascendance wasn't very good or that I disliked it, in fact I still loved it, but I found the beginning fighting scenes that take up a good 40% of the book were unnecessary for someone reading this series for the wit, sarcasm and fantasy elements. Birmingham is extremely well written and his action sequences are believable and inspiring. I struggled ... Continue Reading...
Top 10 Things I Love About The Lunar Chronicles!
1. Bad Ass Mechanics Yeah that's right, number one on the list is Cinder because she's awesome. She's skilled and tough. She's has had a hard life but doesn't let that get in the way of doing what's right. She's the perfect space-criminal Cinderella. 2. It's Unpredictable It's super fun to see how everything comes together at the end of each installment of the Lunar Chronicles series. At the beginning each novel you can sort of see what kinds of plot developments will take place but can't ever predict how they will happen. Even how the broader picture develops is a ...
