This is my review of the revised and published edition of Nirvana. My review of the ARC copy of Nirvana, which I enjoyed, can be found here. I'm pretty sure Nirvana was rewritten to fit with a middle grade audience or YA focus on the second go around. I'm not a reader of middle grade fiction, so my review probably doesn't really fit with the intended audience..but Nirvana works better as an New Adult Speculative Fiction title than a Young Adult title. To be fair, in such a short amount of time the author rewrote Nirvana better than I ever could. Uhh..okay. So, ... Continue Reading...
Dave vs The Monsters: Ascendance
It took me awhile to get through book three of the Dave Hooper trilogy. I've never been much for military fiction so I think that perhaps the amount of fighting scenes in Ascendance might have slowed me down. It's not that Ascendance wasn't very good or that I disliked it, in fact I still loved it, but I found the beginning fighting scenes that take up a good 40% of the book were unnecessary for someone reading this series for the wit, sarcasm and fantasy elements. Birmingham is extremely well written and his action sequences are believable and inspiring. I struggled ... Continue Reading...
Top 10 Things I Love About The Lunar Chronicles!
1. Bad Ass Mechanics Yeah that's right, number one on the list is Cinder because she's awesome. She's skilled and tough. She's has had a hard life but doesn't let that get in the way of doing what's right. She's the perfect space-criminal Cinderella. 2. It's Unpredictable It's super fun to see how everything comes together at the end of each installment of the Lunar Chronicles series. At the beginning each novel you can sort of see what kinds of plot developments will take place but can't ever predict how they will happen. Even how the broader picture develops is a ... Review: MARTians
This is my first novel by Blythe Woolston and to be completely honest I had never heard of her before the release of MARTians. I was not at all disappointed, Blythe is a very talented and creative writer. MARTians is a very dark dystopian novel based on the current societal trend towards wasteful consumption. People have placed all their trust in big companies and their sole drive in life is to consume as much as possible. We also get to follow the disastrous events of Zoe Zindleman's life after she is graduated early from school in the name of "efficiency" and her ... Continue Reading...
Review: Scarlet
Marissa Meyer is quickly becoming one of my favorite YA authors. Her fusion of Young Adult romance and science fiction with personal touches to well known fairy tales makes for a unique read. I love how she's also added a few subtle pieces from the wildly popular Sailor Moon anime without really giving it away. I didn't really pick up on the Sailor Moon influences until I was trying to convince a friend she should read The Lunar Chronicles, but maybe that's only because I'm not a huge fan of anime.. If you have not read Cinder (Lunar Chronicles, Book 1), I would ... Continue Reading...
