When Ellie discovers her fiance is fraternizing with his secretary at their wedding, she flees to the only other place she can call home: a farm that her departed aunt left her in a will. She promptly steals her ex-fiances’ car and burns her wedding dress in a fit of drunken rage that inevitably leads to the local law enforcement getting involved. The moment Ellie meets Sheriff Lucas McCann she immediately feels an attraction that she doesn’t want. After her horrible wedding all she wants is time alone, but when danger follows Ellie to the sleepy small town she now calls home, Ellie must rely on the Sheriff to keep her safe.
Lucas once loved a city girl and realized the error of his ways after a horrible experience that almost costed him the job he loves. He isn’t interested in becoming romantically involved in another selfish city girl until he meets Ellie. Although the Sheriff wants nothing to do with the city girl who won’t stay in the mold he has for city-women, he finds himself entrenched in her life when her safety is threatened. While protecting Ellie is part of his job as a police officer, the desire to be near her begins to grow into something much more than duty. Fighting his attraction, Lucas rushes to uncover the orchestrator of Ellie’s danger before it’s too late.
Initially His Country Bride didn’t impress me much (Shania Twain humor in celebration of a small town, country romance). I struggled to like the main character and the dialogue was different from what I normally read. Fortunately, my mood changed and I became less critical of His Country Bride. I would have missed out on a delightfully sweet fluff read that tells a story of a down on her luck woman and a sheriff with serious scars from a previous relationship.
His Country Bride is a cute, semi-realistic novel that is both fast paced and contains some rarely developed clean romance.
I definitely think this novel is a mood piece. Recently I’ve been disillusioned with relationships and romance, and it negatively impacted my experiences with this novel early on. His Country Bride is a novel written for someone who is looking for a heart warming read with a little suspense.
There’s also an adorable dog named Deacon who steals the show (and my heart).
His Country Bride is what you’d expect from a small town romance: everyone knows everyone, plenty of advice and meddling from the secondary characters, strong bonds and a romance that quickly takes on a mind of its own. There are pie baking contests, a diner where everybody knows your name and a general feeling of kinship between all the characters. I love small town, country novels of all genres mostly because they highlight strong, caring relationships between characters that is often left out of urban-setting novels. His Country Bride does not disappoint in this regard with plenty of side characters and stories to warm hearts of even the most frosty of readers.
This novel will appeal to readers who enjoy clean romance, cute police dogs, small town romance and country bumpkin type setting and romances that struggle to over come huge obstacles. His Country Bride is a mood piece for a sleepy Sunday when you want to read a cottony down country romance that requires very little effort to read. A definite worth while read when you want something cute and light.
